A SCOTTISH businessman has come to the rescue of a 13-year-old boy who faced missing his mother's funeral after he was stranded abroad with his football team.
Mark Shaw, chief executive of Hazledene Group, intervened after he heard about the plight of Connor Cameron, who was stuck in Spain with little hope of making it home to pay his last respects to his mother at her funeral on Friday.
Coaches for Johnstone Burgh FC, which was playing against Real Madrid's junior team, were told it would cost pound(s)5,000 to hire a bus to drive home, but when Mr Shaw, who owns Keanie Park where the Renfrewshire team are based, heard about the situation, he began organising alternative transport.
He arranged for a chauffeur-driven car to collect Connor, a striker with the under-14s team, with one of the coaches' wives and her son. They left Madrid at 1.15pm UK time yesterday and headed north through Spain and France, where they were due to spend the night in Paris.
The car will then take Connor to Zeebrugge in Belgium where he will catch the Norfolkline ferry to Rosyth. He is expected to be home by tomorrow afternoon

HOLIDAYMAKERS had a glimpse of royalty as the Duchess of Cornwall was guest of honour on their cruise liner.
Camilla, who became Godmother of the 90,000-ton Queen Victoria after naming it two years ago, unveiled a plaque yesterday to mark the 170th anniversary of Cunard's first transatlantic crossing from Liverpool.
Hundreds of passengers and well-wishers lined the decks and the banks of the River Mersey to see the Duchess.
Camilla was met by the ship's captain Paul Wright, who took her on a tour which included one of the six galleys which cater for the 2,000 passengers and 900 crew.
She also stopped to talk to cruise-goers before visiting the bridge.
The Queen Victoria is currently midway through a tour of the British Isles.
And among the well-wishers were Robert and Sheila McGuiness, from Newcastle, who were spending their second holiday aboard.
Mrs McGuiness, aged 65, a retired pub owner, said: "We went around the world on the Queen Victoria last year and we have come back because we had a wonderful time.
"I am excited to see Camilla and I think she will feel at home because the ship feels like a palace once inside."

Starkey Laboratories, Inc., a hearing technology company, said that it is the recipient of two awards for Sweep Technology, which is featured on S Series iQ hearing aids.
In a release, the Company noted that it was honored with a Stevie Award in the Best New Innovation category during The 2010 American Business Awards. In addition, Sweep Technology collected a Silver 2010 International Design Excellence Award (IDEA) from the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA).
"We are proud to be recognized for our innovative technology that makes hearing aids both smarter and simpler," said Jerry Ruzicka, President of Starkey. "These awards are a testament to the hard work our research, design and development teams have done to make Sweep Technology a reality."
Sweep Technology is available on Starkey behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids. A touch panel on the spine of the hearing aid allows wearers to adjust volume up or down and change the memory setting with the simple sweep or touch of a finger.
